Given a singly linked list and a position, delete a linked list node at the given position.

Deletion-at-a-Specific-Position-of-Singly-Linked-List

Example:

Input: position = 1, Linked List = 8->2->3->1->7
Output: Linked List =  8->3->1->7

Input: position = 0, Linked List = 8->2->3->1->7
Output: Linked List = 2->3->1->7

Approach:

If the node to be deleted is the root, simply delete it. To delete a middle node, we must have a pointer to the node previous to the node to be deleted.

Here are the algorithmic steps to delete a linked list node at a given position:

  1. Input: A pointer to the head node of the linked list and the value to be deleted.
  2. If the linked list is empty, return NULL.
  3. If the node to be deleted is the head node, set the head node to the next node and delete the original head node.
  4. Otherwise, traverse the linked list from the head node until the node to be deleted is found.
  5. If the node to be deleted is not found, return NULL.
  6. Otherwise, set the previous node’s next pointer to the node after the node to be deleted.
  7. Delete the node to be deleted.
  8. Return the head node of the linked list.

Below is the implementation of the above idea.

C++14

// A complete working C++ program to delete
// a node in a linked list at a given position
#include <iostream>
using namespace std;

// A linked list node
class Node {
public:
    int data;
    Node* next;
};

// Given a reference (pointer to pointer) to
// the head of a list and an int inserts a
// new node on the front of the list.
void push(Node** head_ref, int new_data)
{
    Node* new_node = new Node();
    new_node->data = new_data;
    new_node->next = (*head_ref);
    (*head_ref) = new_node;
}

// Given a reference (pointer to pointer) to
// the head of a list and a position, deletes
// the node at the given position
void deleteNode(Node** head_ref, int position)
{

    // If linked list is empty
    if (*head_ref == NULL)
        return;

    // Store head node
    Node* temp = *head_ref;

    // If head needs to be removed
    if (position == 0) {

        // Change head
        *head_ref = temp->next;

        // Free old head

    }

    // Find previous node of the node to be deleted

Output

Created Linked List: 8 2 3 1 7
Linked List after Deletion at position 4: 8 2 3 1

Time Complexity:

  • Best Case: O(1) if given position is 1
  • Average  & Worst Case: O(N) where N is the length of the linked list. This is because in the worst case, we need to traverse the entire linked list to find the node to be deleted.

Auxiliary Space: O(1) as we are only using a constant amount of extra space for temporary variables and pointers, regardless of the size of the linked list. Specifically, we only need to allocate memory for a few temporary pointers (e.g., current, temp) and the new head pointer if the original head is deleted. The memory for the deleted node(s) is also freed as soon as it is deleted
